Who in your life who has passed away is most memorable or meaningful to you?
For me, it's a package deal. I miss having grandparents. While one grandmother remains alive, her dementia is so severe that the woman I recall from growing up is lost. I remember griping about my grandparents as a teen because they were behind the times and not culturally competent, but nowadays I see them with a softer lens. Was it my grandfather's job to see the world the way I did? Nope. But he did his best to be loving, a wonderful husband and a great father to my mother. Both sets of my grandparents were shaped by the depression and were meticulous savers. On my mom's side, they pre-paid for their funerals and bought their way into an assisted living home so they would never be a "burden" to my mother and uncle. I admire them for their strength, love and well-planned life. Now, why do you think those traits didn't make it to my Mom? (Insert smile).
